Car/Air Shows

Gents,

What are the collective thoughts on attending a car/air show this late summer?  We can man a table to tout our club, show folks interested in modeling some built models and perhaps give some inexpensive kits to kids.  There is a car/air show in Bath County called Wings and Wheels.  It could be a good chance to have a fun outing together and car guys can look at cars and aircraft guys can look at airplanes!   Welcome your thoughts!

  1. Chris,
I think this is a great idea. Culpepper and Leesburg both have air shows this fall as well. I know Culpepper usually has a small car show too. It’s close enough that it draws folks from the valley and might be worth setting up. The Culpepper show was pretty great last time I went.

  2. Hagerstown has “Wings & Wheels”, or at least use to. Martinsburg ANGB has one scheduled for Aug 26 & 27th.

Upside to these: Free admission and lots of interested folks. Get to meet some interesting people, mostly Veterans who might even be well known (met several WWII era pilots in years past). Lots of reference materials right in front of you.

Downside: Kids grabbing everything in site; Models melt in the sun (ask me how I know ); sunburn ; wind knocking over your display; trying to keep members at the table; expensive food/drinks (many won’t let you bring in your own coolers even if you are working); and trying to carry your precious creations from the parking lot to the tables without dropping them.

I loved doing this stuff when I could. The key is to be able to set up inside of a hanger, park right next to the hangar/building, and have lots of help so everyone can enjoy the event while making sure little (and not so little) hands don’t destroy what you bring. You will need a banner, hand outs, and other promotional items. Might even be able to organize a “Make & Take” for the event. Atlantis Toy & Hobby has snap kits (cars at the moment, maybe helicopters if they have any left) that they have with this in mind.

    • Mark, you always have great insights! The Wings and Wheels is listed on the web as taking place this year (I think August), I was not aware of the Martinsburg ANG show (nice and close by!). Mark, if I reach out to the Wings and Wheels folks, can you find a POC for the Martinsburg ANG one. I can be open to not taking models given the risks you speak of, but am open to others’ ideas on what to bring. I can bring flyers like I give out to local hobby shops. If we can collectively get the inexpensive kits from hobby lobby and do make it-take it sessions for those interested. And sunblock!!

      • Some of the Gundam/Star Wars/Pokemon models would be good options for the make and take I think. Prepainted, easy to assemble, fairly inexpensive. I’m happy to grab a few the next time they’re on sale at the Lobby.

    • The W and W event is pretty far away so we can nix that. I found a POC for the Martinsburg ANG event and have emailed that person and will advise what the response will be. I will also email the IPMS regional guy to see if they have a poster or something we can use to attract folks to our table…
